Winter, and the Cabin on Cow Creek
High Siskiyou winter, and the cabin on Cow Creek lies buried under drifts of snow. Blowing snow covers the trails and the frozen creek, disfigures pines and firs, blows into cracks in the cabin walls and sags the aging roof. This world is a whirl of wind and snow-swelled clouds.
Under the snow, the inside of the cabin is a cave. The air is still and the howl of the storm is muffled. It's too dark to read stories penciled on walls by 60 years of visitors. The ash in the stove is old. No one has been here for at least a month.
This cabin is so buried in winter, not even the deer stop by.
