Just After Snowmelt

The snow is just gone from the shore of Upper Klamath Lake. Patterns on the ground are the ripples of melting snow. No winter storm rolls off the crest of the Cascades to flood this valley with sleet and biting wind. No ice to make the lake look asleep. The water is smooth, caught between the dormancy of winter and the splashing of mallards and geese that will nest here this spring.

The snow has left just recently. Too early for buds in the aspens. Too early for the new shoots of grasses that bring the deer. The snow was here not long ago. Brown reeds lie smashed to the ground by the memory of snow.
