The First Snow of Winter
Out of the dark, before dawn, the first snow of winter drifts into town without warning. With the first light, I can almost hear the simultaneous, wide-mouthed oohs and ahhs of amazed and excited children, the across-town clicking on of radios to see if today will be a school day or a play in the snow day. Adults glance at thermometers and know this valley snow won't be here long. But children, clad in wool and boots drug out of the backs of closets, make this morning of snowy bliss last forever -- clear past noon -- when grass reappears and sculptures of people and monsters and dogs take all afternoon to melt.
