The Best Home Stories Ever Had

Coyote's Cupboard, a lava cave in the high desert of Northeast California, is one of my favorite places to tell stories. Words drum off basalt, dance in nooks and crannies, step back as echoes, then lie still, waiting for the next part of the story.

Once a Modoc Indian ceremonial cave, it is currently used by Boy Scouts who perpetuate a semblance of the old ways, by spelunkers and hunters, by weekend tourists and curiosity seekers, and by folks like me who wander in every so often and swell the basalt with words.

This cave holds stories in. Words drum and dance, they step, they bounce. And then they wait. Coyote's Cupboard is the best home stories ever had.
