Casebeer's Cider Press
In November, after the pear and apple orchards around Talent have been picked, after frosts have sweetened fruit the pickers missed, and hungry bears who yearly raid these trees have had their fill of windfalls, we gather what is left and crank Casebeer's cider press.
Built in 1877, with one tooth missing in the giant cog, this press rattles out pear and apple cider with one of the few pleasing sounds the Industrial Revolution ever produced. Fifteen gallons a day to be canned, to be frozen, to be set in tubs on the back porch to sweeten and turn lively.
