Springtime is Creation Time

My Yurok friend tells me that springtime is the best season to tell creation stories, while nature is reshaping spring out of winter, and the world is swelled with color and life.... "That's a good idea," he says.

In the 1920s, in the dead heat of August, an anthropologist asked my friend's grandmother for a creation story. "I can pay you," he said. "That's a bad idea," the woman replied. "Creation happened a long time ago. I don't remember how it went. How about I bake you a blackberry pie. Good idea?" And she did. Blackberries were in season. Creation stories weren't.

"Springtime is creation time," says my Yurok friend, a good time to shape a new world out of words.
