Let Us Drink Under the Bright Beams of the Moon

Relaxing with friends in the Neil Creek hot tub, waiting for the rising of the full January moon, with a jar of local ale at hand, I think of what the poet Bashō said on a similar occasion: "Let us drink under the bright beams of the moon."

Just after sunset, over the snowy ridges of the Cascades, the curve of the moon blinks a half open eye at us, and within minutes we soak and drink under the moon's white light.

The Neil Creek hot tub breathes steam into the night. The dimmest stars blink out. The moon travels its long winter trail toward morning.
