Only a Few More Nights of Frost

I walk through the Indian War cemetery at Emigrant Lake, the spring grasses full of last night's frost.

Among the "Unknown Indian War Vet" markers is a gravestone of a young soldier shot on Evans Creek in 1853. It reads: "This tomb is erected by his mother who feels his death as the rose feels the blighted frost. Fearless he stood upon that bloody field, bravely, until his mournful doom was sealed. The fatal shot left naught for me but gloom, my son, that laid thee low."

I walk through the frozen grass. Only a few more fearless nights of frost, I'm thinking. Only a few reminders of the cold-blooded breath of winter.
