Hiking the Grizzly Peak Trail

I hike the Grizzly Peak trail in November. On the north slope, where there is a lack of sun, the dust of summer hiking has turned to mud with the melting of the first snow.

This trail was blazed last summer and it'll take a few seasons of storms to drop pine needles and boughs on the bare dirt and make a less muddy trail. Meanwhile, the black mud is worth it for the view of Mount Shasta rising like an island above the washes of fall haze, and to breathe the alpine breezes blowing across the peak.

Another week and this trail will doze under drifts of blowing snow -- will doze for months -- until the spring run-off brings the mud back once again.
