At Grouse Gap Shelter
Seven in the morning with Father Mark at Grouse Gap Shelter. In the shadow of Mount Ashland looking toward Mount Shasta, in the cool breeze, morning comes early. Sun slices the horizon with a knife of light.
Here since midnight last night -- 2 hours of stories and the fire. Then dreaming under the brightest stars that can be imagined, and the hooting of owls and the slow chewing of browsing deer.
Green alpine meadow is strewn with granite boulders and clumps of bushes. Fringed with forests. And the morning breeze carries the sun-rising songs of birds and pre-dawn groans of log trucks down the valley toward Colestine.
