Indian Summer Walking

My favorite time to walk in the mountains is Indian summer, when September stretches into October like a new month never happened. Damp with dew, fall grass greens pathways that meander through the baked brown of what is left of summer. A symbol of approaching winter, clouds wrap mountain peaks like snow, and walking early in the morning I feel a nip in the air.

The Irish call this time "The Travelers' Time" -- cool mornings, pleasant days, harvest moon, the same moon the local Indians call "Snowy Mountains in the Morning Moon."

Summer behind, winter on the horizon, I walk the mornings the few fall days Indian summer makes perfect.
