Like Coyote

Late night in September at Crater Lake, the stars flare, and a quarter moon tips sideways across the sky, spilling light. I walk the rim, pulling in breaths of night air and eyeing sparks of the night stars.

One star stands out, a large star over the north rim, the star Coyote fell in love with in a Klamath myth. She flashes the colors of fall: reds and yellows. She is so bright she draws a line of light across the surface of the lake, despite the spilled light of the moon, despite the light of other stars.

Like Coyote, I'm attracted to the colors. I grab at the star. The moon spills out myths.
