A New Story

In the evening, the river slows to silence. Gwisgwashan, caretaker of the old myths, stands on the riverbank and dreams up a story. She lights a small fire. She steps into the light and whispers the first word.

The fire watches her. Flames catch the shapes of the story, miming gestures and movements. Smoke mixes with mist and drifts downriver.

The river listens and cradles each word. Sounds of the story flow to the river's mouth. Words tumble through rapids and rest in the eddies, shouted and whispered again and again. The silence between each word is a deep pool.

At first light, Gwisgwashan nods off and drifts toward dreams. Mist settles along the river. Morning is damp with a new story.
