Solitude

The first sunny day after a week of storms, I walk across the Mulligan Bay meadow at Squaw Lake. The lake is brimmed with rainwater, the air filled with birdsongs. Honey bees whir from yellow dandelions to small white flowers that look like stars.

Three days before the Memorial Day crowd, this solitude is precious.

My companions are the sounds of bees and birds, the splash of mountain trout. Deer and coyotes share my path. Turtles ride the debris of wood that bobs near the shore. Like myself, they are ready to scramble at the first sign of too large a crowd.

This first sunny day, solitude is precious.
