The Toll Road

It takes bucks to get to the mouth of the Klamath River. The only way down the hill to the beach is the toll road at Dad's Camp.

Native stories describe the beach as the entrance to the land beyond the sunset, the Land of the Dead. Some say you get there by traveling the trail of the Milky Way, walking quickly by day and sleeping at night by campfires we see as stars. Others say you canoe the trail of sunlight left by the setting sun. Either way, the journey is spendy.

The sign at Dad's Camp reads: "Toll Road. Two dollars and fifty cents. No exceptions."

Everybody pays to get to the Land of the Dead.
