Trains

When I was a boy I loved the clickety-clack of trains. I imagined riding the rails beyond the sprawl of town into forests and mountains where folks had adventures, a little-boy dream I've acted out more than once.

A friend of mine had a similar childhood. He lived with his parents near a switching yard, and every half hour -- day and night -- he pointed out the window and yelled, "Look! A train!" until they sold the house and moved away.

These days our childhoods live on in the little boy down the street who waves at nearly every train that clickety-clacks through Ashland. He waves until the train is out of sight, but not quite out of mind.
